Hebrews 1:1-2 – After God spoke long ago in various manners and in various ways to our ancestors through the prophets, in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he created the world.
The writer of the book of Hebrews declares that God spoke in different manners, in different ways to the Israel of old. He spoke in hundreds of ways in the Old Testament; by words, signs, wonders, and by His acts.
The methods were surely “distinct.” But, the final way in which He chose to speak was in one manner, one comprehensive way, and that is in His Son. God’s Son is His one way of speaking at the end, in the last days, not of the earth but of the old covenant.
DISCERN THE VOICE
There is no way anyone is going to receive anything from God other than through Jesus Christ. God does not speak other than in His Son. This is how He intends to speak in the last days. This is crucial to understand because many voices in the world claim to be the voice of the Lord.
In the last decade and more, we have seen a resurgence of prophets and apostles, most claiming to be spokespersons for God. God does use people and appoints leaders, mentors and teachers to teach us His mind. However, His appointed and anointed ones not only carry His voice, but also His heart, not building their own networks and kingdoms in the name of the Lord.
THROUGH THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST
If a layperson, a believer in Christ wants to know what God says concerning you, you have to come to His Son. In His Son-Christ, we have all that our Father ever wants to say to us. He speaks to our hearts today through the Spirit of His Son.
Yet, many still struggle to hear Him or understand how the Lord speaks. This is basic to understand that we have nothing apart from Christ, and we need nothing apart from Him. You can study everything that has ever been penned on Christian faith, hear every preacher in the world and still be the same man or woman.
TRAINING OF SONS
The Lord’s methods are very practical, and He teaches us by actions and experience. This life to live is at times extremely challenging. It is called, “the training of sons.”
Hebrews 12:6-11 – “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son he accepts.”
Endure your suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? But if you do not experience discipline, something all sons have shared in, then you are illegitimate and are not sons. Besides, we have experienced discipline from our earthly fathers and we respected them; shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the Father of spirits and receive life? For they disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness. Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it.
We who are partakers of this divine calling and of Christ will go into the training school and receive tough education in His ways and will, but through these, we will come to understand how great is our inheritance in Christ.
Hebrews 3:1 – Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partakers in a heavenly calling, take note of Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess…”
