Genesis 2:18 – Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”

This devotional is my first that concerns marriage and family. Genesis 2:18–25 is the first mention of the institution of marriage in the Bible, and it is through this important passage, that we will take practical applications for our lives.

As we notice in these verses, God established a marriage covenant to complete the lack in man. Up to this time in the book of Genesis, everything the Lord created was good and complementing each other.

God puts Adam in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. He states that man is alone without a companion suited to help him in accomplishing the Lord’s command to be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

Genesis 1:28 – And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Though Adam was made in the image of God, he could not build a relationship with the animals around him whom he named. He needed a companion just like him, to understand him, know him, support him, and with whom he could relate, just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit relate to each other.

The Lord creates a companion for Adam, a “helper,” which in Hebrew, is “ezer,” which implies to one who is coequal to Adam, a helper to aid and support him. The one who is made to work together and have dominion over the earth for the glory of the Lord. Eve, who was made out of the rib of Adam was called the mother of all the living.

Genesis 3:20 – The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

The Hebrew for Eve is “chavah”  which means, living. Paul, standing in the midst of the Areios Pagos, aka., Mars Hill, declared to the people of Athens that God made every nation of the human race to inhabit the entire earth from one man. So, as Adam is the father of all living, Eve is the mother.

Acts 17:26 – And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place.

Matthew Henry, the famous theologian remarks, “The woman was made of a rib out of the side of Adam; not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near to his heart to be beloved.”

Many, who are married become conscious of their own self-centeredness in a manner that they may have not known if they were single. We must then repent for our own self-seeking ways daily, asking for the Lord’s mercy and the forgiveness of our spouses when we fall. Single and married alike must desire to overcome their own self-centeredness and ego which kills any relationship, that they might walk as sons and daughters of the living God.
