*Reading Time: 3 minutes*

Joshua 2:8-12 – Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof and said to the men, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign…”

Fear of the Lord

We know from scripture that Rahab was a woman of faith and counted in as one of the heroes in Hebrews 11. Canaanite, and being one she would not have sufficient knowledge of the God of Israel but she knew had a few things right which saved her:

She feared the Lord, the God of Israel.

Joshua 2:11 – And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

She was aware of the mighty deliverance He had given Israel out of Egypt.

Joshua 2:10 – For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.

She knew that the Lord of Israel was God of Heaven and Earth.

She specifically used the word, “Yhovah” for “Lord”

Joshua 2:11 – And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

She knew the wrath of the Lord was about to fall.

Rahab knew that God’s judgment was about to fall on Jericho and that she was directly in its way!

Joshua 2:12-13 – Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”

She wanted deliverance from death not only for herself but for her whole family.

Joshua 2:13 – that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”

What is the Fear of the Lord?

Rahab feared the Lord which according to scripture is the beginning of wisdom. Her fear of the Lord was because of what was going to happen. These are the days when people do not want to hear about the judgment of God. The systems of the world have formed an understanding that man is the ultimate answer to all things.

Scripture gives testimony to this,

Romans 3:18 – “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Many are open to hearing of the love of God but not of His righteousness, judgment or even His wrath. Many churches and Christians are being deceived and are drifting away into cults and heresies.

Rahab understood this well even though she was not a follower of the Lord of Israel. She was willing to take the risk and put her life at stake to help the spies of Israel.

Perfect Love

When I speak of judgment, righteousness and even wrath, I want you to understand well that as a child of God, you should not be frightened of your Father in heaven. If you are terrified or afraid of God, then it is a flawed understanding of what Christ has done for you.

You must always remember that a believer in Jesus stands before God in the abundance of the grace of the Lord because of the cross and the shed blood of Christ. However, we should live in reverent fear of God knowing how powerful He is and how ordinary we are.

We must as Rahab, appreciate the kindness and grace of God as we live in this fallen world, which represents Jericho of her day. We prepare ourselves to mature in Christ and the fear of the Lord by not just living in the now but with eternity in mind.

Godwin.
